The Jonamac apples are the apples my dad likes to pick the most - just kidding! Jonamac's tend to be pretty small so it seems to take forever to fill a bushel but their size make it an ideal apple for kids' lunches!
Approximate Ripening Date: August 26th
Flavor: The Jonamac has a crisp and juicy flesh with a tart-sweet flavor. Many folks think kids just like sweet apples but I've found it has more to do with the size and texture. Think about the kids that are say 5-8 ... how many teeth are in their mouths let alone loose teeth? They like an apple that is crisp but not too hard, and small enough to actually take a bite of. The Jonamac's are definitely a kid favorite.
Baking: The Jonamac will cook down into a smoother sauce.
History: McIntosh x Jonathan developed at the NY State Agricultural Experiment Station in 1972.
